FASHION S/S 2011 - 70’s FAMILY LIFE

imageimageimageimage

MOLL 31

This post is about another abandoned building. This time an apartment complex built in East Berlin in the 60’s. Wiebke Loeper went back to the building she grew up in. Back to the apartment where she was born and where her mother died at the age of 39. Wiebke reconstructed the pictures from her youth that were in her photo album. She made a little book with’ before and afters’ of her life in her old home. I was very touched by this book. When I visited the Kunstgalerij the other day I immediately had to think about it.

I remember a building like this from my childhood. A friend from primary school lived there. Those days feel like happy days. I still find the 70’s look very beautiful and feminine.

FASHION S/S 2011 - JUMPSUITS

imageimageimage

Almost every designer has jumpsuits in their collection this season. I recently bought two of them with my American Apparel gift card. The weird thing is that I had to search for them and found them at the far end corner of the shop.

Woman wearing all-in-one’s, it all began during WWI. Woman that started to do man’s jobs pulled on a functional factory uniform. During WWII other functional all-in-ones were created for woman, namely shelter suits. Fashion designers of that time like Elsa Schiaparelli, who was the Queen of elegance, created functional but fashionable air-raid-shelter suits that woman could quickly slip into before rushing out to a shelter.

Besides these functional suits, fashionable woman just before WWII were already wearing all-in-one’s at the beach, the so called beach pyjama’s. In the 1960’s André Courrèges and Paco Rabbanne designed their futuristic all-in-one’s and from the 1970’s designers as Yves Saint Laurent gave the jumpsuits an elegant touch. In the 1980’s the jumpsuit reached its peak. And now they’re back!

This season you can buy all kinds of jumpsuits. From uni colored till flower printed ones, from mini till maxi. And you can wear them from elegant chic till casual street style. The choice is yours!

FASHION S/S 2011 - BRIGHT COLORS, LONG SKIRTS

image

Fashion is getting more and more about combining and styling. There are many different styles at the moment, with inspiration coming from the twenties till the nineties. You can mix and match and choose whatever is good on you, and how you feel like. I would say, fashion is finally nice to people. Especially for woman.

A lot of woman will be relieved. For example; if your legs are in good shape you can wear a hot-pants, if your legs aren’t your best part you wear one of those lovely long skirts. Or, if you can, you do both. I’ve experienced wearing a long skirt today. The fabric softly stroked my legs while moving around,  it’s a wonderful and very feminine feeling.

I’m going to try out different summer styles made out of my own wardrobe. Now and than supplemented with some new bought clothes. Yes I can!

MAY 13 - A SYMBOLIC PRESENT

Besides my occasional shopping visits to Antwerp, I never plan my shopping.

I either simply run into things I like, or I feel an intuitive attraction towards a store, a magnetic pull that leads me to what ever makes my hart beat faster. This phenomena happened last on March 17.

While looking for a birthday present for a friend today, I ran into this lovely pink shawl in a second hand shop. It was hanging there, screaming my name; MARIËLLA! MARIËLLA!
I bought this shawl as a present for myself for completing my shopping-less year.

MAY 7, AA CHANGED STYLE

With my American Apparel gift card in my pocket I cycled to the AA shop today. I felt excited and strange at the same time. While cycling I got scooped by another bicycle, and fell to the ground. I didn’t get hurt but it made me think. Was it a sign? I got up and told myself to get on with my first shopping after 367 days.

Still a little shaky, the first thing I looked for at AA were a pair of denim hot pants. That item was on my wish-list for this summer. While looking for a nice top to go with the hot pants, I asked myself; What happened to AA? I knew they changed to a more preppy style, which I quite liked, but after a year long absence I realized the new AA style didn’t suit me at all. It’s a funny and very daring style with a big wink to the 80’s; long transparent pleated skirts and big transparent blouses mixed with lace bodysuits and hot-pants with a small belt and a short wide top, finished with a bow in your hair and funny big sunglasses. I felt a bit too mature for that.

The good stuff was hidden upstairs. I found some jumpsuits and some other items I liked so much about AA before I stopped shopping. They stored their former collection upstairs but that didn’t bother me. I’m one year behind, so I have to catch up first.

My shopping spree ended with 2 jumpsuits (the one in the picture and a dark grey in jersey), 2 braided multi colored robe-belts and 2 tops. Feeling happy I jumped on my bike. I reached my home safely.

DAY 365 - MAY 4, FINAL DAY

I MADE IT!

  • I reached my goal.
  • I didn’t break my rule.
  • My question can be answered with a firm Yes!

I can recommend it to everybody. It’s a great way to go through your wardrobe. The daily pictures are a perfect tool to see what works best on your body. It’s an interesting experience to take a good objective look at yourself. And of course, the pictures give a good indication of your collection. It makes you question if you really need that third black cardigan or that sixth pair of blue jeans.

I discovered that new combinations can make you feel like you’re wearing something new. I would never have made some of the combinations I made if it weren’t for this blog. My purple printed Eley Kishimoto top combination for example. I bought this top together with a matching silk skirt and handbag as an astonishing outfit. I felt quite formal in the complete outfit on day 255  but in combination with a pair of jeans I rediscovered this beautiful top.

DAY 364 - MAY 3, NEXT TO THE LAST DAY

We’re on a family get-together in the Veluwe. On my last day of a year without buying any new clothes I will be surrounded by woods instead of shops. To be honest, I don’t have any problems with that. I don’t feel the need to immediately buy clothes after the year is over. I do feel like finally dressing the way I want instead of having to create a new combination out of my wardrobe day after day.

I brought my playsuit from Monique van Heist because I miss wearing it. The combinations with this suit were limited (5). I can’t wait to wear it again.
